Stop trying to get rich in two weeks.
Start planning to get rich in two years.

I saw this quote on Twitter a month ago. If you are looking for a quick way to become a successful photographer, like in two weeks, please stop reading (I don’t care if you have been a photographer for 3 years straight). If not, great, then this article is for you alone.

What is success? Everyone has a definition of success, and what it means to them, and that is great. To some, money isn’t an issue. To others, it is the only issue that exists. Now, this article is for them that money is the only issue that exists.

What do you have to do to become financially successful as a photographer?

  1. Have a portfolio. You will not get any gig without having a portfolio of works. It could be printed, it could be online. But I do advice having both. In case you meet a potential client in person, you want to show them something physical, something they can touch and feel and leave a smile on their faces, a thing that will excite them and choose you. That is the impression you want to create.
  2. Be Visible. It’s 2020. You don’t have money to build a website? Okay, great, use social media. This is what most prospects need, anyway. Someway somehow, people are asking less of websites and asking for what is your username. If you cannot be visible, then it’s your fault. The internet has given everyone a common ground. The ability to make yourself seen in the presence of millions, if not billions, of people. What is stopping you? Are you a hoarder of art? Then, don’t hoard them anymore.
  3. Be in a marketable niche. What I realize in recent times is that there are niches that are not marketable. Answer this for yourself. When was the last time you shot a paid gig as a photographer? Can you remember the last time? Then this is simple: people do not need your services. I tweeted one time that;

the saddest thing that could happen to a photographer is his services required because he owns a camera.

It’s not too late. If the niche is not helping you, be quick to switch. Put your ego aside and try something new. Try something that works. But it’s competitive. Because of its competitive nature, it shows that it works. Some works (niches) will make you no money.

5. Network. You’re not getting the jobs? When was the last time you networked? I’m sure it wasn’t yesterday. It takes persistence to win. You don’t try it once or twice and give up. Not at all. The internet has leveled the playing field. It doesn’t care if you’re gay and it doesn’t care if you’re straight. If you can produce value and can produce it well more than any person with exceptional communication skills, then you are hired! Trust me on this one. That’s how you win. Don’t be shy, text them privately. Show them the value you can bring to them and the problem you’re solving in a simple text. This is how you win.

There are many more ways to become financially successful as a photographer, but I will leave them for part 2. I do not wish to bore you with lots of words.
