Are You Running Out Of Photo Ideas? Read This.

The thing about ideas is that they can be given to you everywhere, anywhere, mostly through thought, sight, or emotions. I bet some photographers have come up with some of their best concepts by just being still, or playing, or just observing.

I want you to know this. “There is nothing new under the sun.” This is the word of the wisest king of Israel; Solomon. Your idea is not new, your thoughts are not new, and whatever you wish to create or make has been created.

Everything is a remix. We are all thieves, just that there are some who are better at stealing ideas. This could probably be the difference between the great artist and the terrible artist. Everything is a remix.

If you are running out of ideas as a photographer, then this quick read will bring you much value. If you want to check out my work, tap on this link.

Be Bold

Battling with a creative block and with nothing in my mind to create, I thought I’d just go to the beach with a friend and you know, try to make shoot anything that comes to mind. I had literally no idea what I was going to do on that day. Do, we got to the beach, and I saw a man with a horse. I’ve made no photograph with any animal. Horses are huge. I thought a little and reached out to this man and his horse and asked if I could make some photos with it. I made my friend pose with it and we got this:

This became one of my favourite photos and also was selected to be one of the top 50 images in the world in the Agora Photo Competition. I was at the beach because I wanted to overcome a creative rut which I was battling for over 182 days. This photograph was my breakthrough, my freedom to create again. I was bold to go out to tackle this creative rut. Bold to reach out to a stranger and a horse. Be bold.

Watch Photographs of Your Role Models

As a photographer, it’s important to have role models. A role model is a shortcut to success. If you don’t have a role model, then you are probably going to find it difficult to make anything of substance. Why? Because your role model is that to you because he or she is somewhere you wish to be. Watching and or observing photos of people you wish to create like is going to give you ideas. Like I said, there is nothing new under the sun. Copy. Just be good at it. Soem of the photographers I love to watch are Adrian McDonald and Chase Jarvis. I love these two so much!

Create What You Feel

There are many times where words will not do enough for us. Words will fail us, but an illustration will do you so much good. An illustration will communicate exactly what you feel. A few years ago, I lost a friend, a close friend. My thought every morning was, “he has departed the world.” I always thought of death. Am I next? It wasn’t fear, it was grief. It was refusing to leave me. I just had to create something. And I came up with this.

Starting out as a photographer and still seeking my niche, I had nothing to do but to experiment. I did not want to settle without tasting every option I had. So, I did just that; tasted. One time, I was making photos with a friend and he had a trumpet. I was going to create something with this trumpet. And then, boom! This happened:

My very first silhouette. This was the birth of something new! From that day, I kept making photos like these, to print and sell.
